Does The Number On The Scale Determine Your Health?

Does the number on your scale determine your health? I hear this question all the time and the answer is :

Definitely not!

Your metabolic health is more important than the number on your scale.

What is metabolic health?

Metabolic health is a wide range of biochemical functions that contribute to cellular damage, premature ageing and organ dysfunction and the good news is that some of the processes are reversible.

In this article, I will reveal simple tips to check your health status and take action.

As a nutritionist, I always look at the latest biochemical laboratory results which tell a lot about the current state of health of my clients.

Optimal blood sugar levels, glycated haemoglobin (A1c), fasting triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol & low-density cholesterol (LDL), blood pressure, the key inflammatory marker CRP, white blood cells and nutrients status (vitamin D, B12, B9, zinc, iron) as well as hormonal panels.

Ask a professional to read your blood results and point out markers that could be a root cause of a potential health issue.

Also, measure your waist-to-hip ratio because belly fat is a risk factor for many chronic inflammatory diseases such as insulin resistance, diabetes, stroke or heart attack.

The basic formula is dividing your waist circumference by your hip circumference.

To measure your waist circumference. Stand up straight, exhale and measure around the smallest part of your waist, just above your belly button.

To measure your hip circumference, place the tape around the largest part of your hips and the widest part of your buttocks.

Check below if you are at risk. Are you above 0.80 ( for women) and above 0.95 (for men)?

By now you know that there is a space for improvement but what exactly should you do?

You are unique and personalised action plan would be the best choice. Nutrition is key but can food alone help?

Unfortunately not. Dietary interventions will have limited effect if you don’t improve other aspects of your life.

There are other pillars of Health & Wellbeing that have a significant impact on your metabolic health and overall approach to healthier living.
