5 Key Habits for a Successful Lifestyle Makeover

What are the key habits for a successful lifestyle makeover and how to apply them?

Those were my questions many years ago. I used to compare myself to successful people who were busy entrepreneurs and yet they managed to look fit and strong. How did they achieve it?

I was reading many self-help books, wrote down what it takes. I wanted to become the best version of myself, but my dreams seemed too overwhelming or distant and my plans failed most of the time.

This was my typical routine: “OK, I will start next Monday, next week, next month or after the holidays. However, those Mondays, weeks, months and numerous holidays were passing by, and I was still caught up in the vicious circle of bad habits.

I used to be a terrible procrastinator, and if there weren’t any fixed deadlines or fire on the roof, I would find other activities (read excuses) to keep myself busy and to postpone those unpleasant tasks (finishing assignments, going to the gym, reading, limiting social media, sticking to my diet plan).

These are the five keys that helped me successfully turn my dreams into reality

  • Preparation
  • Determination
  • Self-discipline
  • Consistency
  • Self-love

1. Preparation

Preparation is the key to a successful lifestyle. We all have the same amount of time in a day.

If I ask you what is most important for you? The answer would be probably “health and family”. How many hours per week do you dedicate to these precious priorities daily?

How can you improve it?

Schedule an hour each Sunday to plan your Health & Wellbeing appointments with yourself and good quality time with your family.

Health is our biggest wealth, so treat these appointments with the same urgency as the meeting with your boss. You certainly wouldn’t cancel the meeting with your boss, would you? Why would you postpone or cancel a workout plan or dinner with your friends?

Health also means eating well as food is the fuel that determines your energy levels and productivity.

Preparation of balanced meals is vital to successful lifestyle makeover. Are you planning your weekly meals? Do you keep track of what you eat and why? Emotional overeating versus physical hunger?

In my interactive workshops, I teach meal planning and simple food preparation techniques of delicious & nutritious meals ready in just 15 minutes (so that you avoid processed unhealthy food that drains your energy and mess up with your hormones).

2. Determination

A clear vision is another key to successful lifestyle makeover.

Knowing your goals and most importantly, WHY & HOW you want to achieve them gives you the purpose and determination so that you get up in the morning energized and ready to succeed.

Remember that it is crucial to set up achievable, sustainable and measurable goals with a clearly determined time frame.

During my studies, I was experimenting with different lifestyle habits and diets so that I knew what mental, emotional and physical impact such changes might have on my clients. That’s why I developed multidimensional programmes that focus on all aspects of Health & Wellbeing, not just nutrition.

Here are examples of clear & specific goals:

  • For the next 30 days, I will eliminate coffee & sugar from my diet to rebalance hormones
  • The next two months, I will read daily for 15 minutes to broaden my knowledge and improve focus
  • For the next 7 days, I will walk 10 000 steps to improve my cardio and build muscle mass
  • In the next 6 weeks, I will dedicate 5 non-negotiable hours to complete my online course
  • Every Sunday I will schedule 3 hours to plan and prepare balanced meals for the whole week

Write down 4-6 goals and download my Habit Tracker so that you can track your progress.

3. Self-discipline

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.”

The key to successful lifestyle makeover is to avoid distractions and minimise the impact of emotions and feelings on your performance. Mute notifications on your social media if you want to have a productive workflow or remove any junk food from your pantry if you want to lose weight and get into shape.

We all know that motivation is not going to appear on our doorstep, and the initial enthusiasm fades away quite quickly.

Self-discipline is a learned behaviour and only with daily practise and constant repetition; you can master it. The habits must become automatic action. Like brushing the teeth. You don’t question if you want or not. You JUST DO IT!

Create a vision board with all your goals, dreams, values & missions. Read it daily to keep your focus and conscious decisions aligned with your internal commitment.

He is my personal challenge. I schedule a run for Sunday morning. It is raining, I have a sore back and I am tired. My motivation is very low. I have to act very fast otherwise, my brain will give me millions of reasons why I shouldn’t do it (such as “it is muddy and you can slide and hurt your knee”, “you are hungry so it is better to eat now”).

I know that I must implement the 5-second rule, put the shoes on and go. The action comes first motivation comes after.

The result? I might go for a 20-minute run and in the end do 1 hour.

4.  Consistency

Consistency is key to success because you are committed to putting your effort every single day in the direction of your goals.

Remember to take small steps and do not try to change everything at once; otherwise, you are preparing yourself to fail.

You wouldn’t run a marathon right away, would you?

If you want to include exercise into your daily routine start with 10 minutes of jogging or stretching and build into it consistently.

The same applies to nutrition. Slowly incorporate clean eating principles into your routine. Decrease portion size, eliminate refined food, include protein to every meal, and so on.

If you promised to yourself that you would exercise, read or go to sleep earlier. Keep that promise!

5.  Self-love

Self-love is often the hardest thing for us to practice. Taming the inner critic might be initially a challenging task but with the practice of mindfulness, meditation, positive affirmations, EFT or hypnotherapy you can replace the negative self-talk with positive & motivational statements.

If you set up a challenge, the chances are that at some point, you will stumble. We all have ups & downs, and unexpected events make us reschedule or slip but don’t let the frustration, anger or guilt take over. Be kind to yourself, refocus and move on.

The best part of using these key habits is the reward system. We all love to feel appreciated but rather than searching for the approval from others praise yourself. If you believe in yourself, the opinions or criticism from others does not influence your performance and belief system.

Even a small achievement deserves a little reward, so make your wish list super exciting.

If you have something to look forward, your motivation will be skyrocketing, and you will accomplish your task in no time.

However, do NOT reward yourself with food! Food is fuel, not a reward!

I love going to the wellness park with my friends. Sauna, thermal bath or massage are the best rewards for me.

Take the action today:

Awareness, acceptance and action are the necessary steps to beat any bad habit that doesn’t serve to your highest good.

Remember that habits are powerful. It takes a minimum of 21 days before you break the bad habit and automatize the new one.

Finally, I would be delighted to hear from you.
